Sorry, didn't realise not everybody gat a copy through their door, nothing worse than people commenting on a document you haven't read yourself. Rather than scan the flyer, it's short enough that I've typed it verbatim (spelling and errors incl), and here it is :-
"Dear Orsett Resident,
I am writing to give you notice about the Forthcoming Music Festival that is being organised to be held at the Orsett Showground's on 29th/30th May 2010.
The Event itself will be professionally run by an Event Management company with 30 years experience. Holding this event in Thurrock & Orsett will definitely put us on the map, as it will bring in famous international stars to the area, as well as providing great opportunity for local residents and our neighbours to enjoy this great music festival. And also enable us to generate additional economical benefits for the local businesses of Thurrock.
I appreciate that the initial reaction would be of apprehension on holding such an event. However, being an orsett resident myself I intend to ensure that everything is run efficiently, with minimum of disruption to the local community and for maximum benefit.
The key areas of concern being addressed are:
1. An experienced team will manage the event with 30 years proven experience
2. Security measures and Health & Safety requirements fully met and adhered too
3. Although, there will be an increase in noise levels in the area from amplified music. a. No music will be in the open air, as all confined in big top circus tents b. The music will end at a respectful time of 11.00pm
4. Increase nuisance to the public would typically include "mess" left behind; consequently a very large clean up crew that will be in charge of clearing the showground and immediate local vicinity etc; and
5. Traffic congestion; this will be kept to a minimum with traffic controllers and clear signs directing out to main traffic roads and not via the village. No one to venture towards the residential areas.
I want Orsett Residents to genuinely benefit from the Event and see it as a positive event to look forward too and enjoy. That being said I also would like to make a donation to local Orsett groups/charities out of any profits made. For example the Orsett School & Orsett in Bloom as potential candidates.
If you would like to put forward any group or charity from within Orsett please fill free to do so. Or if you have any worries, concerns or questions, please do not hesitate in contacting me personally on 07985197592

Anyone that's been anywhere near Chelmsford during the "V" Festivel will know that it's a virtual no-go area for anyone except festival attendees.
If traffic gets too bad, revellers will park wherever they can..especially in residential areas. This is unenforceable, unless the organisers plan to have staff in high-vis jackets illegally stopping all vehicles entering such areas! What fun that will be for local residents!!
If anything like "V", then the A13, A128 and all surrounding roads will just become car parks!
Seems a quite ill-conceived plan from someone who actually lives locally!
Cheers

Thanks - it sounds horrendous. It would be interesting to know what sort of ticket cap they are planning to impose. Can we expect 2,000, 5,000, 10,000 people to descend? JohnC is right - where is everyone going to park? And how do they expect to ensure that no-one ventures towards the residential areas? Surely it would be a wristband exit/re-entry scheme?
It's a madcap idea, and whilst the showground may be large, it's not 'two day music festival' large.

rather than jump the gun on criticism here maybe we should give them the opportunity to show us how professional they are... all the fine detail, im sure, will be explained if any of us were to call the number.
it is a showground afterall we should expect it to be used as one! like the thurrock music festival and other local events music does stop at a respectable time!
also taking the time to plan the site layout can pay dividends when it comes to noise complaints... ie placement of speakers, people in/out of the site... these are all things the event co-ordinators should provide the council, police & many other organisations before the event...
lets not be party poopers here just because the last lot were inconsiderate!

Matt, have you been to "V" or anywhere near Chelmsford when it's on??
It's absolutely horrendous..and it's nowhere near any main residential areas!!
Even if well run (as "V" is), the impact on local residents is significant.
I suspect villagers will not be able to enter/exit the village except via Stifford Clays..and that's assuming that traffic is routed away from that area.
I'm with Sexy on this, I don't think the Showground is large enough for a 2-day music festival.
If memory serves (and I stand to be corrected), the "V" site is many times larger than the showground.
I suspect a lot will depend on the calibre of the acts booked. If as the flyer states, they will be booking "major international acts", then expect mayhem!
OK..just checked and Hylands Park in Chelmsford is 570 acres. Orsett Showground is 30!!!
Cheers

This should be rejected out of hand. The 'Noble' crew proved, last year, that the village and surrounding area does not have the infrastructure to support the kind of event that has been proposed. I live in the Green and DID NOT receive a leaflet. I am sorry, but if you've got 30 years experience of organising events, and you fail to notify thos that live amongst the closest to the proposed venue, then you are a mighty slow learner. Such a basic mistake at such an early stage only serves to suggest that the rest of the organisation will be as useless and ineffective.
There is not one single benefit of holding this event in the Village and I oppose it. Any 'donation' is in fact nothing more than a bribe. |

OK
Well, I started this, so I'll ring the number tomorrow and let you know what was said
In advance I have to say that I've reservations 'cause it seems the company hasn't a traceable phone number and neither has the registered office at 5 Randall Drive, seems there's only a mobile to organise 30 years experience......
Let you know tomorrow, if I can get a reply. |

I think you'll find torro these guys dont need to let you know... thats down to the council and showground operators... and maybe you will notice a planning application for the prevention of parking in rectory road and the surrounding area on those specific days...
maybe they only got so far round the village and will continue when they have some more time to flyer the place....
i would assume visitors would be routed into the area from the orsett cock keeping the main roads into the village freeish... yes agree the v fest is total grid lock - but doubt that level of traffic will around orsett due to its much smaller size.
maybe if its decent music i may even attend...

I think you'll find, Matt, that I didn't say they NEEDED to let me know. I was pointing out that if they HAD let me know (and the rest of those people who have not been informed) it would have been better, more organised, less stealthy, more transparent and, in general, more polite. The fact they they didn't and the very fact that people are commenting on that fact on this notice board proves, to my mind, they they have missed a trick by missing us out.
I only pointed out, and stand by my comments, that an events company with 30 years of experience would know, without doubt, that not to inform all local residents of such an event at the same time is a big mistake. Inefficiency and disorganistion at such an early stage is not a good sign.
I will be on forced holiday that weekend. Putting Orsett on the map!?!? Yes, as a place to avoid whilst the festival is on.
I also have not noticed, despite regularly walking circuits of the Village to assist in baby sleeping, any notice to say that perking will be banned in The Green. This was not the case, either, with the Noble people and the road was over-run.
I'll bet you £20 right now that the music goes on after 11pm. Does anyone really, honestly believe that it won't? |

As someone who used to live in Chelmsford, I can confirm that from my flat I could quite clearly hear the "Dance Tent" at V - the nearest stage to where I lived - from a distance of around 2 miles in a straight line, with a hill and a railway line in between. Most houses in Orsett I would estimate will be less than a mile from any tents playing loud music on the Showground.
Is there any mechanism for us to object to Thurrock Council? |

| Perhaps Angela Smith would hurry up and build her motorway through the showground to stop this event? |

OK, just got off the phone with Denise in Thurrock Licensing Dept
1. Apparently, there should be notices outside the showground detailing the event and how to object, should you desire to do so. The Licensing Dept said they will check next week whether these are in situ.
2. Unless any *valid* objections are received, the licensing application will not even go before committee for discussion and will just be granted (subject to Police, Planning and H&S approval)
I got the impression that this *is* going to go ahead.
I asked about projected number of attendees and none had been provided!
I asked about Council enforcement during the event and was told "it's impossible to enforce a 2-day event"!!
Apparently, the organisers were not required to issue the maildrop and it appears he has earned some brownie points at the council by doing so!
I was a little surprised that no amount of anticipated attendees had been stipulated and I subsequently asked how any sort of traffic impact ana1ysis could be done without it. The response from the Licensing Dept was that such ana1ysis would not be done by them, but by the Planning Dept, who would report back to the Licensing Depot if there were any problems!
Anyway, I was told to send a letter to the Licensing Dept if I had any valid objections
Cheers
JC
Sorry for the weird edit, but the board doesn't seem to like the word ana1ysis..I can see why, but surely it should only be in isolation and not when part of a larger one!! |

Orsett Show attendance is about 15,000 a day in 30 acres. They manage the car parking well and the village is never horrendously busy on the day (V Festival attandance is about 60,000 per day in comparison).
I agree that I'd rather have the showground used than built on! I think the exceptionally noisy day last year has just worried people.
We've had Music Festivals there in past years, and there was a music event at Blackshots last summer organised by the council .. don't remember hearing any complaints about the noise from those events so it must be possible to have a music event without drowning out everyone within a 2 mile radius!
I don't personally get het up about things like that if they're only once or twice a year anyway - it's like your neighbours having a party, acceptable if it's only now and again but wouldn't want it every week!
